Cash
A cash gift could be an alternative – if you feel that it is appropriate and are
comfortable with the idea. This raises a question as to whether a gift of cash can be
given to just anyone. I would say no. Cash must be given with sensitivity and taste;
you would not want to give cash to your husband or boyfriend, or your boss,
colleagues and friends. For those close to you, the gift must be more personal and
intimate – cash would not do. It would, however, be quite acceptable if you were to
give cash to children or teenager, say your nephews or nieces who might in fact
prefer. For his birthday, my little nephew collected cash from all his aunties and
with that he happily bought $70 remote controlled racing car and few other toys,
something he had been eyeing for sometime. During my college day, before went
back to college my aunt usually gave me cash as I can spend or saved it into my
saving account.
How much cash would you give? Buying a gift can disguise the exact amount of
money you have spent – and there is some relief or comfort in the anonymity – but
there is no hiding that fact in a cash gift. How much you give really depends on your
income and your relationship with the other person; perhaps there is some sort of
established norm within the family. The higher your income and the closer your
relationship, the more you’ll have to give. As a rough guideline you could give
approximately the equivalent of the cost of a gift you would have bought for that
person.
Some good manners to observe when a cash gift is given: use crisp new notes (not
torn and tacky ones), fold them into one of those gift packets that you can purchase
quite easily or tuck it into a greeting card.
For a person who is out of town and not coming back during the holidays, a cash gift
can be send through online by Western Union in order to avoid the hassle of queuing
up at the bank or post office for doing money order or bank draft.
But there is one setback for giving money as a gift. Consider the father whose
Christmas gift to his daughter is a fat check, though she is struggling to claim her
independence and make it on her own. She doesn’t know whether to be grateful for
the assistance or resentful because she knows subconsciously they both know that on
cashing the check she accepts his dominance and is again reduced to the position of
his “little girl”.

5 Valuable Gifts
For those who can’t stand the shopping
crowds, for those who can’t decide or for
those who just want to give something
different this time or this season
(perhaps something practical and useful),
there are some other options you could
take. Why not consider, a gift of money,
which could be given as cash or gift
certificates? Or you could start a saving
account for someone, take out an
insurance policy or buy some stocks and
share in that person’s name. While it is
not the usual gift that you might go for or
think about, it could turn out to be highly
appreciated.
Gift Certificate
If the idea of giving cash doesn’t really appeal to you try it in a different form –
purchase some gift certificates which are redeemable at the store from which you
purchased them and can be used for any item or items which total up to the
certificates amount. No redemption for cash is allowed though, so the recipient
will have to make a purchase with the certificates. The certificates are usually
valid for a specific period, which depends on the store.
To make the certificates a special gift, give some thought to the wrappings and
trimmings which would lend a nice note to the gift. Write a simple message that
says, “A Gift from the Heart”. For example, the wrapping could be disguise in a
huge box nestled with masses of tissue and put some weight in the box (if you want
to).
Search at
Savings Accounts
Open a savings account in someone else’s name as a gift. This would normally only be
practical for a close relative for example from a god mother/father to her/his
newborn god children or from an aunt/uncle to his newborn niece/nephew.
Apart being a gift, you are teaching the kids to save from young and it is something
for them to grow up with the good habit and be proud of some day.
Stocks & share
These are not the kind of gift that you would usually give or get – it is definitely
only for someone special. Perhaps a child has just graduated from the university
and come this holiday, she’ll be beginning a new life for herself. Buying her one lot
of shares would be a gesture that says, “You’re grown up now, an adult and
responsible for your own future.” The message brings its own rewards - she will
feel more adult and more responsible. It would definitely cost more than a watch
or a briefcase, but would be more appreciated. Stocks and shares can also be gifts
from a husband to his wife or from the wife to her husband. Try it for a change.
The nice thought behind a gift of stocks and shares, unit trusts and savings
accounts it that they are not one-time gifts – instead they can bring rewards or
benefits which stretch over some years. It is a gift that can be held on to for some
time and which will most likely appreciate in value. Your gift is a gift that has value
over the years.
Insurance
If stocks are too costly for you, why not take out an insurance policy under your
children’s names? When they are young, the premiums are small and can be fitted
into your budget. My insurance sources that this is quite popular and lots of
parents sign on insurance policies as porposers with their children as nominees.
While we have been discussing gifts of money to friends and relatives, the spirit
behind gift giving is sharing and giving with those around us, none more so than
with those who are lacking either a family or material things. A gift of money can
be extended to these people through the form of donations, to those in orphanages
or the handicapped. This could be a great gift for yourself too, that is by helping
others. It is a heart-warming gesture to show that you care.
to find suitable gift certificates for your love one.
