Most of us have faced this conundrum
before: should you worry about giving
your co-workers gifts at Christmases,
birthdays, and other occasions, or would
it be better to ignore the holidays? Of
course, that's up to you -- though you can
probably guess our vote. Some offices get
around the Christmas issue by having
Secret Santas or by making a game of
gift-giving at the company Christmas party,
but some of us like to go that extra mile to
make all those we work with feel valued.
If you're one of those people, you've
come to the right place!
The Right Gifts for the Workplace
What's appropriate?
If you do decide to give your officemates a little present, you have to ask yourself
first what would be appropriate. You're probably unwilling to spend as much as you
would for, say, your three-year-old or your Mom, but it doesn't take much to make
people realize you appreciate them. Food is always good, of course, and so are
small, useful items like gift cards to Starbucks. But hey, why follow the crowd? Be
unique. For example, what do most office workers have in common? That's right: we
have to carry ID badges around all the time.
While ID supplies tend not to make the most exciting of gifts, there's one that's an
exception -- that elegant noose known as the lanyard. One thing that the widespread
use of ID badges has forced is the broadening of the lanyard's role. No longer are
they just for supporting compasses or police whistles; lanyards have, in the past
decade or so, come into their own as ID badge holders par excellence. They're
cheap, they're handy, and they keep you from having to reach into your pocket or
purse every time you have to go through a security door.
More personalized items
But suppose that all your co-workers have nice new ID lanyards from the latest
office-supplies conventions they attended, and have no need for new ones. That
requires a bit more cunning. Keep an eye out on their personal habits (without being
nosy, of course) and find out what they enjoy. If one fellow's a big coffee
drinker, buy him some special blend, or at least a nice travel-mug. Or, if the lady in
the next cubicle over loves to do crosswords at lunchtime, why not a big book of
challenging New York Times puzzles? Then there's the food angle. There are those
among us who actually like to cook, and delicious treats are always appreciated at
Yuletide or during birthday celebrations. Of course, if you can't even boil water
without burning it, your options may be limited; but even then you can always
depend on the local bakery for some cookies or a cake. They might not be
homemade, but it's rare that sweets of any sort will be turned down.
And let's not forget the handicrafts angle. If you have a creative hobby, a
handmade item might be a nice touch. Homemade cards, for example, can't be beat
for the caring image they promote. When it comes down to it, the range of gifts you
could give to your co-workers is limited only to your imagination. Whether custom
lanyard or original poem (suitable for framing), just be sure it's appropriate to the
individual and the office, and you'll be all set.
